Issa Boulos composed a captivating piece in 1998 titled "Places, Spaces, and Pink Lights" for clarinet, guitar, and percussion. This evocative composition narrates the journey of two lovers, symbolized by the clarinet and guitar, as they embark on a voyage from al-Maghrib (North Africa) to al-Andalus (Iberian Peninsula). The piece beautifully captures the couple's emotional odyssey as they face the unknown, filled with a mix of hope and trepidation. As they sail towards their new life, the lovers contemplate the promising opportunities that await them in al-Andalus, while simultaneously grappling with fears of the challenges that lie ahead. The percussion's rhythm serves as a metaphor for the ship's steady movement and the couple's unwavering determination to press forward. Throughout the piece, the clarinet and guitar engage in a musical dialogue, mirroring the lovers' internal thoughts and conversations. Their interplay expresses a range of emotions, from hesitation and doubt to nostalgia, fear, and hope. As the composition progresses, it builds to a climactic moment when the couple finally glimpses the horizon and catches their first sight of the new world, encapsulating their complex emotional journey and the anticipation of their arrival in a foreign land. He later added a violin and double bass to the piece.
